Mission Statement

§         Through the dignity of our hard work we will protect the integrity of Union Mills, the rich history of the area and the pride of its citizens for the past 100 years: thus creating a community center for all.  We have formed this organization for the purpose of:

BRINGING OUR COMMUNITY TOGETHER

Goals

§         Our goal is to provide tutoring for our children through after school activities, recreation and cultural enrichment for our adults.  We will provide life enrichment, economic opportunity, continuing education, health and welfare and entertainment. All citizens will benefit from access to the Union Mills property.

We are renovating the buildings and upgrading the grounds to continue education in music, dance, GED classes, after-school tutoring, computer classes, arts and crafts, history and recreation for all of our citizens. Our auditorium will be used for children and parents to demonstrate their creativity in learning, dance recitals, special meetings and local musicians, as well as for touring musicians and arts groups. Our library will have a huge collection of historical documents for visitors and callers. North Carolina students doing research on Rutherford County, call our volunteer now for this information. Our volunteer handles calls and tours from people out of state. Memorabilia will also be donated by our alumni and community. We plan to initiate a program also to gather the oral history from our citizens.

Being a part of community based centers of Rutherford County (which are the former schools located in Union Mills, Gilkey, Green Hills, Dunbar and Kids Sense Museum of Rutherfordton), our facilities will be available for extended programs in each of our communities. A program director will be available to coordinate these programs.

§         The beloved school property once again will be the center of learning and community life in Union Mills.  The buildings will be filled with classes, enterprises, meetings, entertainment, and all the activities that represent the core life of the community, with the school gymnasium and 6.4 acres of land that the Rutherford County Commissioners gave the organization, we want to create programs that will meet the needs of our children, adults, and elderly of our community. We will offer a complete recreational program in its broadest sense with the use of our gym and ball field. The 450-seat auditorium will fulfill our desires to enhance our arts and cultural programs.

It is important to realize that all who are involved in the Union Mills Learning Center are volunteers.  All donations and grants given to the Center go directly to improving the Center, its grounds and buildings.  All donations are gratefully accepted.
